Quote of the Day

We all seek learning in various ways & we all get different impressions, even when we read the same quote. Hopefully this quotes page will give you some hope & inspiration!

August 25, 2016 (Thursday)

“We can complain because rose bushes have thorns, or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses.” -Abraham Lincoln

Life has ups and downs and we can choose what to focus on, but we’ll be a lot happier if we focus on the roses and not the thorns.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

We have amazing potential and should live up to it and be a light to the world. No one benefits from us holding ourselves back.  We have so much to give to the world so lets do it!

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” -Gandhi

We are happier as we look outside ourselves.  As you serve and stop focusing on yourself, you can find joy.

“Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.”  – Eleanor Roosevelt

Gossip doesn’t benefit anyone, we don’t learn or grow from it, discuss ideas instead!

“If you listen with the Spirit, you will find your heart softened, your faith strengthened and your capacity to love the Lord increased.” -President Henry B. Eyring

It is only listening through the Spirit that we receive things the way the Lord would have us to.  That leads to more understanding which builds our faith and love for the Lord. It makes all the difference.

“Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you are born to stand out?” – Ian from What a Girl Wants

It’s so much better to be an original.  We’re not supposed to all be exactly the same and we shouldn’t expend energy on trying to mold ourselves to anyone else’s view.  We are all unique and individual and we should embrace that.

August 19, 2016 (Friday)

“Dark times lie ahead of us and there will be a time when we must choose between what is easy and what is right.”
-Albus Dumbledore

I feel like in today’s world we are often faced with that choice.  Good things come to those who work for them and stay faithful to the truth

August 18, 2016 (Thursday)

“No one likes to fail, but we mortals do not become champions without making mistakes.” -Dieter F. Uchtdorf

We aren’t perfect and sometimes I think we forget that. Learning from our mistakes helps us to grow and become better. We wouldn’t progress at all if our lives were perfect. Any type of success in life requires practice and practice means that sometimes we will make mistakes and that is okay.

“Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny.” -C.S. Lewis

We often view trials negatively and don’t really welcome them into our lives but it is through those trials that we can be refined. It is through the hard times in our lives that we can become even stronger and only through opposition can we progress in this life. We have so much potential within us and the only way to reach that potential is to be tested and tried while we are here on the earth so that one day we can return to live with our Father in Heaven and with our dear Savior, Jesus Christ.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” – Dr. Seuss

I LOVE this quote, it is one my all-time favorite quotes because it is so true! We are in charge of our own lives and we can decide who we want to become. Don’t let anyone stop you from becoming who you want to be. The Lord has given us the gift of agency and we should use it to the fullest extent!

“Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved.”

-President Thomas S. Monson

We must never forget what matters most. The relationships we have are so much more important than any other type of materialistic success we may have. No matter what trials we may be going through we can always reach out to those around us to show how much we love them. As we help those around us we will learn to love them deeper than we ever did before.

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times if one only remembers to turn on the light.” -Albus Dumbledore

There is always hope! We should never give up even when we feel like the darkness is surrounding us. We have the choice of turning to our Savior, Jesus Christ, who is the one true light that can make any and all darkness go away. He is our light and we can always find hope and happiness when we look to Him as our source of light when the world around us is dark.

“The temple is an ever-present reminder that God intends the family to be eternal.” -Ezra Taft Benson

Danny and I had the opportunity to go to the temple today and we love being able to go to the house of the Lord. The peace and love we feel there cannot be compared to anywhere else in this world. I am so grateful to be sealed to my Danny boy for eternity and knowing that we will be with our families forever is such a blessing.

“Why worry? If you have done the very best you can, worrying won’t make it any better.” -Walt Disney

When we are doing the best we can, we need to accept the fact that we aren’t perfect and keep moving forward with our lives. Worry doesn’t help anything so we should slow down and relax more often. Taking life one day at a time helps us to not feel as worried and stressed.

“He who is & remains true to himself & to others has the most attractive quality of the greatest talents.” -Goethe

I think it’s truly refreshing to find & meet someone who has enough self-confidence & goodwill to give credence to themselves.  It’s difficult in a constantly changing society, where our primary political leaders wear masks & disguise their real intentions. I’m grateful for those who remain true to what they know is important & a man/woman’s integrity is never worth compromising.

“An aim is the only fortune worth finding; & it is not to be found in foreign lands but in the heart itself.” -Robert Louis Stevenson

Life really is a metaphorical journey, & so to make it worthwhile, we need to have a set of goals or an aim for our personal progress, to arrive at the correct “final destination.”

“Fears are educated into us & can, if we wish, be educated out.” -Karl Menninger

You have often heard the expression that “perfect faith casteth out fear” (or doubt.) Many of the things we allow ourselves to wrap our mind around are trivial, insignificant details which only make us more apprehensive of the days to come. While it is good to be prepared for such changes, it does no individual any good to live in constant paranoia.

“It is not in the still calm of life, or the repose of pacific station, that great characters are formed. The habits of a vigorous mind are formed in contending with difficulties…great necessities call out great virtues.” -Abigail Adams

I stand in awe of the wisdom the founding fathers & the first ladies possessed! Abigail, wife of the 2nd U.S. President, was a very independent & learned soul. She knew, more than anyone, what it took to form good character & habit; she was a driving force in helping her husband serve in the various roles of our early government & I admire her wisdom very much.

“Astonish your wife (or husband) by doing things that make her (or him) happy.” -Dieter F. Uchtdorf

The word “astonish” in this quote is the key. If we’re focused on the ways we can astonish our spouse with happiness, we can have a truly happy marriage. We will find we spend more of our time thinking about what makes them happy and less time worried about fault finding if our intent is to astonish our other half with happiness.

“Perhaps the greatest magic of the human spirit is the ability to laugh…” -Torey L. Hayden

I love to laugh and I know that it really can improve one’s life to laugh a little more 🙂

“The greatest leaders are the greatest followers.” -Stephen W. Owen

This is such a simple concept, but also profound in that we can really only become our greatest if we’re willing to learn from the greatest.

“Even with the trials of life, because of the Savior’s Atonement and His grace, righteous living will be rewarded with personal peace.” -Quentin L. Cook

Personal peace is such a beautiful promise!

July 31, 2016 (Sunday)

I had the opportunity to prepare a fireside or lesson for some youth at our church. I was asked to talk about becoming truly converted. I loved this opportunity and will share a series of things I learned this week. Here is an excellent quote from Elder Bednar about the definition of conversion.

“Conversion is an enlarging, a deepening, and a broadening of the undergirding base of testimony. It is the result of revelation from God, accompanied by individual repentance, obedience, and diligence. Any honest seeker of truth can become converted by experiencing the mighty change of heart and being spiritually born of God (see Alma 5:12–14).” -David A. Bednar

The first step is believing in our Savior and the second step is following Him, or being converted to His gospel and doing what He would do. Conversion is acting on our testimony of Him. As we do that more and more each day we can become who He wants and hopes for us to become.

“Knowing that the gospel is true is the essence of a testimony. Consistently being true to the gospel is the essence of conversion.” -David A. Bednar

Our actions speak louder than our words.

“Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved.” -Thomas S. Monson

People are the most important things in our lives, put loving them first.

“Everybody is a genius.  But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -Albert Einstein

We shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, we all have individual strengths and the world wouldn’t function if everyone was only really good at the same thing.  So take some time and figure what gifts and abilities the Lord has given you and develop them, blessing the world with your completely individual form of genius.

“Don’t cry because it’s over.  Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Seuss

We can’t go back but instead of mourning that we should celebrate our happy moments.

-Shana

I often cry when things end….so this is a good quote for me too, because it’s idea to celebrate being happy & what makes us happiest in the moment it happens.

July 26, 2016 (Tuesday)

“How we live our religion is far more important than what we say about our religion.” -Robert D. Hales

Actions speak louder than words

July 25, 2016 (Monday

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

We are all children of a loving Heavenly Father and should never think less of ourselves, even when other people’s words or actions might disparage us, God never will.  He created us and loves us, the opinions of others shouldn’t matter.

-Shana

July 24, 2016 (Sunday)

“Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are usually right.” -Henry Ford

We often limit ourselves by believing we can’t do things, but it’s so much better to believe.

-Shana

July 23, 2016 (Saturday)

“I do not feel obliged to believe the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use.” -Galileo Galilei

God gave us the ability to reason for ourselves and we should not expect him to outline our every choice.  He will guide us when the situation is beyond us, but we must put in our part too, including diligent searching and studying.

-Shana

July 22, 2016 (Friday)

“It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses…There are no ‘ordinary’ people. You have never talked to a mere mortal…And our charity must be a real and costly love…”  – C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

It’s important to remember the divine nature of those around us.  As we interact with other people this mindset helps us treat others the way we should, so that our interactions with them only have the potential to build them up.

“True happiness comes only by making others happy.” -David O. McKay

I have never known this to be more true than now that I am married. But I am so happy right now and I know that, that happiness has come from serving my husband and putting his needs before my own. When I know he is happy, then I am the happiest I can be! This applies to every relationship we have because as we put others’ needs before our own, we don’t have time to think about ourselves and thus we gain so much more happiness than we could ever have from selfishness. Service is our saving grace and through it we learn to love more and find true happiness.

July 19, 2016 (Tuesday)

“The great thing in this world is not so much where we stand as in what direction we are moving.” -Olivier Wendell Holmes Sr.

This is a tried & true gospel principle we hear talked about at church all the time. God really only cares about what direction we’re headed in, & He will help us along that journey. – Katie

July 14, 2016 (Thursday)

“To give up pretensions is as blessed a relief as to get them gratified.” – William James

No one really feels accomplished by pretending to be someone they’re not. It’s a good feeling to be yourself & be liked/accepted by others. -Katie

July 13, 2016 (Wednesday)

“Better to remain silent & be thought a fool than to speak & remove all doubt.” -Abraham Lincoln

Being quiet & listening is not one of my strong suits, but what President Lincoln says here is an encouragement to conveying myself as a wiser person. Sometimes just sitting & soaking things in helps us gain better perspective, than speaking or acting on those things anyway. -Katie

July 12, 2016 (Tuesday)

“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

July 11, 2016 (Monday)

“Be courteous to all, but intimate with few; & let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow growth, & must undergo & withstand the shocks of adversity before it’s  entitled to the appellation.” -George Washington

The lesson of making true friends is illustrated perfectly by his analogy of a plant. Most friendships that last are tried and true! -Katie

July 10, 2016 (Sunday)

“Trials & tribulations tend to squeeze the artificiality out of us, leaving the essence of what we really are & clarifying what we really yearn for.” -Neal A. Maxwell

July 9, 2016 (Saturday)

“We do not learn so much by our successes as we learn by failures—our own & others’. Especially if we see the failures properly corrected.”– Frank Lloyd Wright

There’s this cool new aspect of learning that involves building myelin (a.k.a. strengthening brain capacity) based on The Talent Code written by: Daniel Coyle. It is that our most valuable learning takes place by learning from our mistakes….by deep practicing the skills we want to master, & realizing that we are going to mess up along the way. -Katie

July 8, 2016 (Friday):

“Happiness, not in another place but this place, not for another hour but this hour.” Walt Whitman

This is a perfect quote for Friday/the weekend; it’s time to unwind a little! Enjoy life as it happens….don’t just look forward to things. 🙂 -Katie
